ATOLL 808, Funafuti, 1984
ATOLL 808 were a short-lived electro DJ duo from Funafuti, Tuvalu, formed around 1981 by Mele Tavita and Ruth "Roo" Kealoha.
After hearing early electro, rap and boogie records brought in by sailors, alongside shortwave radio broadcasts from across the Pacific, the duo began creating their own raw electro music. Kealoha, whose father was American and mother Tuvaluan, became the group's fast, sharp rap voice, while Tavita handled the rhythms and vocoder textures.
Their only release, the 1984 "Night Swim EP", contained three songs: "Night Swim", "Wavebreaker" and "Ruth Roo Electric".
Soon after the EP appeared, ATOLL 808 vanished from the local scene. Some say Ruth left Tuvalu. Others claim the remaining copies travelled between sailors, radio DJs and cassette traders until almost nothing remained.
